Nerida's DIY

Another wonderful DIY bag to share.

Nerida has used different fabrics to accent the bag with this lovely pattern being used on the straps.  She has also enhanced the finished bag with the beautiful embroidered design on the front.  Great stuff!

Eva's incredible handpainted DIY Baby

Eva used colours from her favourite wearing wraps and slings to provide inspiration for the beautiful handpainting on her Onbag.  The 'triskel' symbols and brightly coloured triangles look fantastic.  Eva says 'this is my favourite bag now, even when I go out without my baby'.

The design was completed using standard textile paints and colours.  Eva's friend Petra sewed the bag for her, leaving parts of the bag fabric white so that the textile paint colours remained vibrant and clear.

A stunning bag!

Onbag Baby - 'butchered version'!

Well, I wouldn't call it butchered!  But the talented lady who made this bag, and two slings with accessories to match (!) insists that she's messed about with it to the point that I'd be horrified!

Well, I think I'll cope, because it looks fantastic.  I love the applique cat, and with the ringsling and pouch it will be stunning.

You can see her whole journey here on the Natural Mamas Forum.  Now we just have to wait for the lucky owner to get her fantastic present, and for her to send in some action shots!

"Here is a quick description:

I had roughly 1 meter of 150cm wide fabric left over from making other things.

I was in a hurry so ...

I cut the lining and main fabric pieces together, then stiched around each piece and left a small opening on a seam edge (so opening would be closed when sewing bag together) to be able to turn each piece and topstich tops of pockets, bag edges, etc, thus removing the need for rolled hems and making the pieces easier to work with (I could do this because my lining [an old bedsheet] was a block colour which would not look odd if it showed through some seams).

The strap was 3 lengths of the remaining fabric sewn together using french seams to ensure the strength of the strap wasn't compromised (the main fabric and lining were sewn independently for this so that the seams would lie next to each other and not on top of each other when sewn together to reduce bulk) and the joins were blended into the aethetics by placing the strap/loops (instead of elastic) just under the join on each side.

As the joins sit just above the main body of the bag they interfere with neither the functionality of the straps nor the drap and feel of the main bag.

I made the bag wider to reduce the "blocky" look of the end product and I ignored the recomendations for pocket sizes and simply made pockets which looked and felt right to me.

I added a pocket to the outside, back panel of the bag for shoving muslin squares/tissues, etc into.

I added side pockets on the inside too for bottles/talc/drinks

I hate velcro with a rather strong passion so I used a magnet bag clasp under the pocket on the front panel instead."

Joanne's Blue Swirls Custom Onbag Classic Set

This is Joanne's new Custom Classic Onbag.

She has chosen a deep navy blue cotton drill outer, and a shimmering blue taffeta with a swirling design for the lining.

The valuables bag matches, and uses the swirling taffeta to great effect on the straps.

I love the way that the similar colours of the lining and outer fabric work together.  The effect is very subtle but there is real luxury there.

I hope Joanne will enjoy her set, it is very beautiful!

Kim's DIY Bag - The Tester...

"I'm not an experienced sewer, so I was kind of scared that I couldn't do this. I've been ready to order on of Sara's Onbags a million times, but LE Didy's kept being released, so I never found the money.

And since no one wanted to buy my Aqua Hopp Florenz on the Dutch babywearing forum I thought I might as well use it for an Onbag.

But I made a trial version first. From darkblue Ikeacurtains I had stocked in the attick, and some shiney fuchsia lining. I found the pattern quite a puzzle, but it all worked out in the end.

I finished the whole thing just after midnight... I'm getting the hang of this sewing-thing. I want do do it againnnn! "

I think Kim did a great job - I can't wait to see the wrap-conversion!

Nicole's DIY Dog Print Bag

"I just wanted to thank you for posting the instructions! It took me 8.5 weeks, but I did it!

I made a few mistakes, but overall I am happy with my outcome.

My straps are 20 inches shorter than you suggest, but I like them."

Nicole has chosen a really interesting dog print for the lining of her bag, and a nice soft blue for the outer fabric.
